The Rondo Theatre Company presented Steven Berkoffs East at the Rondo Theatre, Larkhall, Bath on April 6th - 9th 2005.
East is a riot of a play; violent, bawdy, politically incorrect, fast-paced and raunchy, just like the lives of the people it portrays. Berkoff was born in Stepney, in Londons East End, and his 1975 play gives an impressionistic portrait of his early life in the person of two young cockney tearaways Mike and Les in the early 1970s and their girlfriends and families. It veers from sentimental cockney ballads to rock and roll, and uses mime, dance and Shakespearean pastiche. The scene in which Mike turn Les into a motorbike has become as much of a classic theatrical image as metal horse heads did in Equus. This production is the latest in a series of challenging choices by the company, which have included Patrick Marbers Closer and Dennis Potters Brimstone and Treacle.
